Bereishit Chapter 2

 

א וַיְכֻלּוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ וְכָל-צְבָאָם

 

 

Vayechulu hashamayim veha'aretz vechol-tzeva'am.

 

 

1. Finished were the heaven and earth, and all their host.

 

 

ב וַיְכַל אֱלֹהִים בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וַיִּשְׁבֹּת בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי מִכָּל-מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה

 

 

Vayechal Elokim bayom hashvi'i melachto asher asah vayishbot bayom hashvi'i mikol-melachto asher asah.

 

 

2. On the seventh day G-d finished all His work which He made. He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He made.

 

 

ג וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת-יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וַיְקַדֵּשׁ אֹתוֹ כִּי בוֹ שָׁבַת מִכָּל-מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר-בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים לַעֲשׂוֹת

 

 

Vayevarech Elokim et-yom hashvi'i vayekadesh oto ki vo shavat mikol-melachto asher-bara Elokim la'asot.

 

 

3. G-d blessed the seventh day, and He sanctified it, for in it He rested from all His work, which G-d created to make.

ד אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם בְּיוֹם עֲשׂוֹת יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים--אֶרֶץ וְשָׁמָיִם

 

 

Eleh toledot hashamayim veha'aretz behibare'am beyom asot HASHEM Elokim eretz veshamayim.

 

 

4. These are the chronicles of heaven and earth when they were created, on the day of HASHEM G-d's making of earth and heaven.

 

 

ה וְכֹל שִׂיחַ הַשָּׂדֶה טֶרֶם יִהְיֶה בָאָרֶץ וְכָל-עֵשֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶה טֶרֶם יִצְמָח כִּי לֹא הִמְטִיר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים עַל-הָאָרֶץ וְאָדָם אַיִן לַעֲבֹד אֶת-הָאֲדָמָה

 

 

Vechol siach hasadeh terem yihyeh va'aretz vechol-esev hasadeh terem yitzmach ki lo himetir HASHEM Elokim al-ha'aretz ve'adam ayin la'avod et-ha'adamah.

 

 

5. All the shrubs of the field were not yet on the earth, and all the grass of the field had not yet sprouted, for HASHEM G-d had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was no man to work the ground.

 

 

ו וְאֵד יַעֲלֶה מִן-הָאָרֶץ וְהִשְׁקָה אֶת-כָּל-פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה

 

 

Ve'ed ya'aleh min-ha'aretz vehishkah et-kol-penei ha'adamah.

 

 

6. A mist rose up from the earth, and it watered all the face of the ground.

 

 

ז וַיִּיצֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָאָדָם עָפָר מִן-הָאֲדָמָה וַיִּפַּח בְּאַפָּיו נִשְׁמַת חַיִּים וַיְהִי הָאָדָם לְנֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה

 

 

Vayitzer HASHEM Elokim et-ha'adam afar min-ha'adamah vayipach pe'apav nishmat chayim vayehi ha'adam lenefesh chayah.

 

 

7. HASHEM G-d formed the man, dust from the ground, and He blew in his nostrils a breath of life. Man became a living soul.

 

 

ח וַיִּטַּע יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים גַּן-בְּעֵדֶן--מִקֶּדֶם וַיָּשֶׂם שָׁם אֶת-הָאָדָם אֲשֶׁר יָצָר

 

 

Vayita HASHEM Elokim gan-be'Eden mikedem vayasem sham et-ha'adam asher yatzar.

 

 

8. HASHEM G-d planted a garden in Eden, to the east, and there He placed the man He had formed.

 

 

ט וַיַּצְמַח יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים מִן-הָאֲדָמָה כָּל-עֵץ נֶחְמָד לְמַרְאֶה וְטוֹב לְמַאֲכָל--וְעֵץ הַחַיִּים בְּתוֹךְ הַגָּן וְעֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע

 

 

Vayatzmach HASHEM Elokim min-ha'adamah kol-etz nechmad lemar'eh vetov lema'achal ve'Etz haChayim betoch hagan ve'Etz haDa'at tov vara.

 

 

9. Out of the ground, HASHEM G-d made grow every tree that is pleasant to look at and good to eat; the Tree of Life in the middle of the garden, and the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil.

 

 

י וְנָהָר יֹצֵא מֵעֵדֶן לְהַשְׁקוֹת אֶת-הַגָּן וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד וְהָיָה לְאַרְבָּעָה רָאשִׁים

 

 

Venahar yotze me'Eden lehashkot et-hagan umisham yipared vehayah le-arba'ah rashim.

 

 

10. A river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four headwaters.

 

 

יא שֵׁם הָאֶחָד פִּישׁוֹן--הוּא הַסֹּבֵב אֵת כָּל-אֶרֶץ הַחֲוִילָה אֲשֶׁר-שָׁם הַזָּהָב

 

 

Shem ha'echad Pishon hu hasovev et kol-eretz haChavilah asher-sham hazahav.

 

 

11. The name of the first is Pishon, which surrounds the land of Chavilah, where there is gold.

 

 

יב וּזְהַב הָאָרֶץ הַהִוא טוֹב שָׁם הַבְּדֹלַח וְאֶבֶן הַשֹּׁהַם

 

 

Uzahav ha'aretz hahi tov sham habedolach ve'even hashoham.

 

 

12. The gold of that land is good. Also found there is bdellium and onyx stones.

 

 

יג וְשֵׁם-הַנָּהָר הַשֵּׁנִי גִּיחוֹן--הוּא הַסּוֹבֵב אֵת כָּל-אֶרֶץ כּוּשׁ

 

 

Veshem hanahar hasheni Gichon hu hasovev et kol-eretz Kush.

 

 

13. The name of the second river is Gichon. It surrounds all the land of Kush.

 

 

יד וְשֵׁם הַנָּהָר הַשְּׁלִישִׁי חִדֶּקֶל הוּא הַהֹלֵךְ קִדְמַת אַשּׁוּר וְהַנָּהָר הָרְבִיעִי הוּא פְרָת

 

 

Veshem hanahar hashlishi Chidekel hu haholekh kidemat Asshur vehanahar ha revi'i hu Ferat.

 

 

14. The name of the third river is Chidekel, which flows to the east of Asshur. And the fourth river is Perat.

 

 

טו וַיִּקַּח יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָאָדָם וַיַּנִּחֵהוּ בְגַן-עֵדֶן לְעָבְדָהּ וּלְשָׁמְרָהּ

 

 

Vayikach HASHEM Elokim et-ha'adam vayanichehu vegan-Eden le'ovdah uleshomrah.

 

 

15. HASHEM G-d took the man; He placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to watch it.

 

 

טז וַיְצַו יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים עַל-הָאָדָם לֵאמֹר מִכֹּל עֵץ-הַגָּן אָכֹל תֹּאכֵל

 

 

Vayetzav HASHEM Elokim al-ha'adam lemor mikol etz-hagan achol tochel.

 

 

16. HASHEM G-d commanded the man, saying, "You may definitely eat from every tree in the garden.

 

 

יז וּמֵעֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע--לֹא תֹאכַל מִמֶּנּוּ כִּי בְּיוֹם אֲכָלְךָ מִמֶּנּוּ--מוֹת תָּמוּת

 

 

Ume'etz hada'at tov vara lo tochal mimenu ki beyom acholcha mimenu mot tamut.

 

 

17. But from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it, you will definitely die."

 

 

יח וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים לֹא-טוֹב הֱיוֹת הָאָדָם לְבַדּוֹ אֶעֱשֶׂה-לּוֹ עֵזֶר כְּנֶגְדּוֹ

 

 

Vayomer HASHEM Elokim lo-tov heyot ha'adam levado e'eseh-lo ezer kenegdo.

 

 

18. HASHEM G-d said, "It is not good for the man be alone. I will make him a helper opposite him."

 

 

יט וַיִּצֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים מִן-הָאֲדָמָה כָּל-חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה וְאֵת כָּל-עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וַיָּבֵא אֶל-הָאָדָם לִרְאוֹת מַה-יִּקְרָא-לוֹ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָא-לוֹ הָאָדָם נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה הוּא שְׁמוֹ

 

 

Vayitzer HASHEM Elokim min-ha'adamah kol-chayat hasadeh ve'et kol-of hashamayim vayave el-ha'adam lir'ot mah-yikra-lo vechol asher yikra-lo ha'adam nefesh chayah hu shemo.

 

 

19. Out of the ground HASHEM G-d formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the sky, and He brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called a living soul, that was its name.

כ וַיִּקְרָא הָאָדָם שֵׁמוֹת לְכָל-הַבְּהֵמָה וּלְעוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וּלְכֹל חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה וּלְאָדָם לֹא-מָצָא עֵזֶר כְּנֶגְדּוֹ

 

 

Vayikra ha'adam shemot lechol-habehemah ule'of hashamayim ulechol chayat hasadeh ule-Adam lo-matza ezer kenegdo.

 

 

20. The man gave names to every animal, to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field. But the man did not find a helper opposite him.

 

 

כא וַיַּפֵּל יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים תַּרְדֵּמָה עַל-הָאָדָם וַיִּישָׁן וַיִּקַּח אַחַת מִצַּלְעֹתָיו וַיִּסְגֹּר בָּשָׂר תַּחְתֶּנָּה

 

 

Vayapel HASHEM Elokim tardemah al-ha'adam vayishan vayikach achat mitzal'otav vayisgor basar tachtenah.

 

 

21. HASHEM G-d caused a deep trance upon the man, and he slept. He took one of his ribs, and closed the flesh in its place.

 

 

כב וַיִּבֶן יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הַצֵּלָע אֲשֶׁר-לָקַח מִן-הָאָדָם לְאִשָּׁה וַיְבִאֶהָ אֶל-הָאָדָם

 

 

Vayiven HASHEM Elokim et-hatzela asher-lakach min-ha'adam le'ishah vayevi'eha el-ha'adam.

 

 

22. HASHEM G-d built the rib that He took from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

 

 

כג וַיֹּאמֶר הָאָדָם זֹאת הַפַּעַם עֶצֶם מֵעֲצָמַי וּבָשָׂר מִבְּשָׂרִי לְזֹאת יִקָּרֵא אִשָּׁה כִּי מֵאִישׁ לֻקְחָה-זֹּאת

 

 

Vayomer ha'adam zot hapa'am etzem me'atzamay uvasar mibesari lezot yikare ishah ki me'ish lukacha-zot.

 

 

23. The man said, "Now this is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman (Ishah) for she was taken from Man (Ish)."

 

 

כד עַל-כֵּן יַעֲזָב-אִישׁ אֶת-אָבִיו וְאֶת-אִמּוֹ וְדָבַק בְּאִשְׁתּוֹ וְהָיוּ לְבָשָׂר אֶחָד

 

 

Al-ken ya'azov-ish et-aviv ve'et imo vedavak be'ishto vehayu levasar echad.

 

 

24. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

 

 

כה וַיִּהְיוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם עֲרוּמִּים הָאָדָם וְאִשְׁתּוֹ וְלֹא יִתְבֹּשָׁשׁוּ

 

 

Vayihyu shneihem arumim ha'adam ve'ishto velo yitboshashu.

 

 

25. The two of them were naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
